The Ghost chair, Eames DAW and Children’s Eames DSW are now in Stock

January 2nd, 2012

New to 2012 for Metro Furniture is the Charles and Ray Eames Children’s DSW, The Philippe Stack inspired Louis XV Ghost chair and the Eames DAW armchair.

The scaled down version of the iconic and popular Eames DSW chair, like the adults chair is constructed from a strong ergonomically shaped polypropylene seat and beech legs, reinforced by black metal rod. A structure which is often referred as the Eiffel base or termed the Eiffel chair. The kids Eames DSW is designed for everyday use and can withstand knocks or bumps and are extremely functional with the ability to wipe clean, ideal for a playroom or a child’s bedroom. The Child’s Eames DSW chair is available in Yellow, Pale Blue, Red and White.

Our Version of the Louis XV Ghost chair offers a completely different look to any room. Inspired by the architect and product designer Phillipe Starck it proves to be a popular and comfortable piece of furniture. Designed in 2002 it combines modern materials and techniques with traditional King Louis XV French style to produce a truly breath taking chair. The Chair is constructed from a single piece of moulded transparent polycarbonate making it a strong durable chair while the clear appearance of the chair add a lightness to any room setting.
The transparent nature of the frame also allows the space to look bigger and less crowded and so is ideally suited for smaller rooms as well. The baroque style of the Ghost Chair would look fantastic at a dressing table, as an occasional chair or as a set around a dining table.

The inspired Eames DAW chair was part of the group of chairs which were the first mass produced plastic chairs. Originally designed in 1948, our reproduction is of a high quality finish which exudes simplicity. Made up a polypropylene seat and a maple base, the high back and waterfall edge allow for comfort. The classic design has been reintroduced in to our homes to give a modern feel.
These chairs are an excellent choice for everyday dining as as the emphasize a softer and more natural feel than the more formal chair. Not only suitable for the domestic living. but also the office, and pubic spaces
You could also consider mixing and matching with other contemporary dining chairs like the Eames DSW or Eames DSR for a unique look.
This stunning chair is available in a variety of colours and is a must have..

Limited Edition Photographs on Canvas by Adam Gopsill

November 1st, 2011

It is my pleasure to present to you my exclusive portfolio of canvases specifically chosen for Metro Furniture. These images have been specially selected from my wide range of work for their uniqueness in colour, light and subject. I have travelled the length and breadth of the UK, from my front room to Hampton Court Palace flower show in my endeavour to capture my intrigue and fascination for beauty. From the small delicate dew on a Sundew’s leaf or the most lone, unloved tree in Grizedale forest each have that special something that I now am thrilled to have the opportunity to share with you.Sundew-Flower-At-Night I am especially proud of the Sundew flower at night canvas (Drosera capensis ‘Albino’), I had to be very patient as the flowers only open for a short period of time. I was fortunate to be able to witness the flowers just as they opened. This particular plant I grow on my window sill and has given me many amazing shots, two of which are available here at Metro.
To be mentioned alongside all these great designers like Eames, Le Corbusier and Bertoia as it is a great honour, I would like to say thank you to Metro for this opportunity.
These images will compliment any of the great styles Metro has to offer, so sit back in your Eames Lounge Chair or selection of your desire and enjoy. Rest assured each canvas is printed to a high quality and is individually numbered and signed by myself on the reverse.

Lounge Chair Luxury, The Le Corbusier LC4

October 16th, 2011

The Le Corbusier Chaise Longue or LC4 for short was designed to fit into the concrete Parisian flats designed by the architect and as such intended for mass production. However the elaborate construction techniques that were employed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand in 1928 made it totally unsuitable for its purpose.

The Chaise longue with its bold and carefully arrangement of colour, texture and form is Le Corbusiers most complicated design. The LC4 Chaise is built upon a H-shaped base, a design which at the time was reminiscent of the wing struts of a Farman Airplane of the First World War. The Chaise’s ergonomically shaped seat which unlike early 19th Century Chaise’s that were immobile, could be adjusted to suit the angle you require to sit at or the size of the individual by moving the leather head rest. The wave of the seat which rests upon the H-base and appears to be floating in mid-air.

According to Le Corbusier himself “a chair is by no means a work of Art; has no soul; it is a machine for sitting in” To be honest with the style and sophistication that the LC4 displays even today we would have to disagree!

Our reproduction Le Corbusier Chaise Longue’s are available in;

And are true to the original design as possible.

The Harry Bertoia Diamond Chair

August 9th, 2011

Diamond Chair

The Beautiful Harry Bertoia Diamond Chair is more a piece sculptor than a chair. Its Airy appearance allows the light to pass through the chair. You can have the Diamond Chair fully upholstered, although it seems a shame to cover up the exposed metal work and detract from the way the chair is meant to be viewed.

After working with Charles Eames in the late 30′s and 40′s experimenting with metal steel rods, Bertoia produced the Diamond Chair as Part of 5 pieces he designed in 1955 that make up the Bertoia Collection (originally for Knoll). All pieces were made from bent steel rods welded together and finished in Chrome. The Diamond chair is Bertoia’s most celebrated piece and is instantly recognisable. The designer chair is a true statement piece and will add a touch of chic to any room. The furniture collection was so successful that Bertoia retired from furniture design and manufacturing and concentrated instead on his first love, sculpture!

Eames Office Chair, Office Sophistication

July 13th, 2011

The Charles Eames office chair, although originally designed in 1958 and termed the “aluminium group” is still as visionary now as when it was first created. Originally designed for indoor and outdoor domestic use the chairs are now exclusively used in offices. The revolutionary design was a significant step away from traditional rigid office chairs at that time, with the seat and back made of a continuous piece of leather stretched taut between the aluminium framework. The various “aluminium group chairs” which they were originally termed, have been constantly updated and modified over the years forming new models. In 1968 EA119 or Eames thin pad office chair adopted the now widely recognized “universal base” while in 1969 the first Soft pad office chair was created (EA219) using the same frame as the thin pad or Eames ribbed office chair but with thick soft leather cushions.

From its original conception in 1958 the chair has spawned a whole range of Eames office chairs that are both practical and elegant. The most popular of which are the Eames mesh office chair (pictured above), Eames ribbed office chair (also known as the Eames thin pad office chair), the Eames lobby chair and the Eames soft pad office chair (also known as the Eames thick pad office chair). All are available with or without castors or in the high or low back form.

The striking design of the contemporary chairs with the contrast between the industrial aluminium material of the frame and the soft Italian leather of the seat is one reason the chairs are still the preferred choice for design savvy consumers and businessmen. The chairs are also still widely used in Talk Shows, News Anchors, by set designers on films, television, and on adverts to add a touch of sophistication and furniture art. Most recently the chair appeared on the latest edition of the UK apprentice around the board room.

Eames LCW History and Success

June 28th, 2011

Probably the most celebrated furniture designer of the 20th Century Charles Eames produced the iconic Eames LCW or lounge chair wood with his wife Ray Eames back in 1946.
The designer chair was based on the designs of Charles and Eero Saarinen’s 1940 joint entry in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” competition, (which they won) but was also influenced by Alvar Aalto’s early work into bent plywood.

Although Aalto’s furniture had not yet been imported into America by 1940, the 1938 retrospective look at Aalto’s work at the MoMA not only led to Charles and Eero’s design but to other experiments in the US, including Designs from the Chicago School of Design, but all others followed Aalto’s original technique. What set the 1940 MoMA entry apart from other experiments in plywood was the ability to mould it on two planes at the same time. However, Charles and Eero’s design was not without its problems and was prone to crack when bent at the sharp angles required and had to be upholstered. Nevertheless the Eames and Saarinen competition entries set a new direction for modern furniture design.

It soon became clear to Charles that the design was far too expensive for the mass market for which they were intended. Over the next 4 years working with his wife Ray Eames, Charles examined the problems and complexities of bending plywood firstly using it to re-design stretcher leg splints for the US Navy. Funding from this project helped enormously with their efforts to produce affordable bent plywood chairs.

One of the great achievements of the Eames LCW was the independent articulation of the seat and back with the use of the rubber shock mounts and like the cantilevered chairs of the 1920’s (Brno chair etc) the Eames design relied on the structure of the chair for its comfort rather than upholstery. However it wasn’t just comfort which separated the Eames design from others. The way the LCW seat almost hovers above the legs and the back pushes forward away from is support is visually as well as ergonomically striking.

Few other designers could claim to not only to revolutionise the design but also the manufacturing process. With the production by the Evans Company and later the Herman Miller Company (and the help of George Nelson), the Eameses brought design to an industrial scale with new methods of bonding and moulding techniques. This influenced not only their later work with the opulent Eames Lounge Chair but also others including the Series 7 and Ant chairs by Arne Jacobsen. In 1946 MoMA hosted an exhibition of Charles and Ray Eames work including the LCW and DCW.

The Metro Furniture reproduction of the 1946 Eames LCW chair design is available in; Beech, Cherry and Walnut Finishes

Mies Van Der Rohe and the Barcelona Chair

June 10th, 2011

Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe was one of the leading masters in modern twentieth century design.

Married in 1913 but it was short-lived and ended in 1921. After his marriage he took up the Dutch ‘van der‘ and his mothers maiden name Rohe which then became the name by which he is now universally known, but to all his friends and close colleagues he was known as Mies .

Born in Aachen, Germany on the 27th March 1886. His interest in design was initiated and nurtured by his father whilst working in his stonemasonry business. From here he moved to Berlin where he worked for the renowned architect and furniture designer, Bruno Paul, then later for Peter Behrens.

Mies studied the works of many leading architects and in 1912 he opened his own offices in Berlin. After active service in WW1, he became interested in the science of skyscraper design which later put him in good stead for the rise in skyscraper construction in the 1930s and 1940s. During the 1920s he also became a member of the ’avant-garde’ set which carried great esteem and promoted his name to a wide audience.

In 1927 he designed one of his most celebrated structures: the German Pavilion at the International Exhibition in Barcelona. For this impressive structure he wanted a stunning designer chair and created the iconic ‘Barcelona chair’ which initially was known as the Pavilion Chair. This designer chair was later honoured with the Modern Art award in 1977.

In the early 1930s Mies became a director of Bauhaus, a school in Germany specialising in architecture and interior design. The School was forced to close in 1933 due to Nazi pressure and the rise of Hitler. But during his time there he designed the Brno chair for the Turgenhadt House in Brno Czech republic. The designer chair is a modernist cantilever chair consisting of a steel frame in a single piece, bent into a C-shape.

In 1944 he became an American Citizen and in 1945 designed Farnsworth house – a stunning minimalist house which is now a public museum. He continued to design various constructions including high rise towers including the Seagram building in New York, the Chicago Federal Centre, IBM Plaza Chicago, Westmount Square in Montreal, and the Toronto Dominion Centre. His final project was the National gallery in Berlin a design he failed to see come to fruition due to ill health.

The Visionary PK22 chair

May 25th, 2011

Poul Kjaerholm’s visionary PK22 chair received immediate critical acclaim when it was first produced in 1956 winning the 1957 Grand price at the Milan Trennali and the 1958 legendary ‘Lunning Award’. It is not hard to see why, with the ultra minimalist PK22 chair bearing more than a passing resemblance to the Barcelona chair. Designed to sit low to the ground, the marriage of industrial brushed stainless and soft Italian leather works in any interior but would be ideal with a low coffee table like the Eames surfboard coffee table.

Over 50 years of comfort, The Eames Lounge Chair

January 22nd, 2011

Who doesn’t recognise the Eames Lounge chair 671 and ottoman 672, when it was first produced in 1956 there was nothing else like it. Innovative in both design and appearance the frame built on the knowledge the Eameses gained designing Lounge Chair Wood (LCW).

However even this sumptuous piece of designer furniture would not have lasted the test of time had it not been ridiculously comfortable. Despite the design still looking beautiful the couple focused first on usability and wanted the chair to resemble a well used baseball mitt.

The lounge chair still looks as fresh today as it did when the Charles and Ray Eames first conceived it. The low seat which is permanently fixed in recline is perfect for relaxing on a Sunday afternoon reading a book or watching your favourite programme on TV.
Our Model true to the original Herman Miller design is made from top quality Italian leather with removable cushions, walnut veneer wooden shells which sit beautifully on cast aluminium 5 star base allowing the lounge chair to swivel.
Our version of the designer chair is available in either White Leather, Black leather or Tan leather the lounge chair and ottoman would compliment any room.
