Harry Bertoia’s Diamond wire chair
In 1952 Harry Bertoia introduced the world to the Diamond chair. When most designers were using rigid wood Bertoia experimented with wire producing a flexible springy feel to his furniture. These designer chairs not only met functional requirements but were also a study of form and space, much like his true passion sculpting. Innovative and comfortable, the delicate appearance belies there strength and durability.
History of the Bertoia Diamond chair
Sculptor turned designer Harry Bertoia teamed up with the husband and wife designers Charles and Ray Eames in the 1940’s. Together they experimented with moulded plywood and bent metal rods. Subsequently the Eames’s produced the DKR wire chair. While this influence led Bertoia to design five wire pieces that became known as the Bertoia collection for Knoll, of which the Diamond chair was the most striking and famous. This legendary collection of designer furniture was immediately successful and resulted in Bertoia receiving the designer of the year award in 1955.
Materials and Construction of the Diamond Chair
Bent metal steel rods are welded together forming a flexible steel lattice work. The base of this practical art comes with four black plastic floor glides, while the chairs have a black upholstered seat.
