Poul M Volther Inspired Corona Chair

History of the Corona Chair

Poul M. Volther was not an architect like many chair designers of that era but rather a trained cabinet-maker. This influence may explain why early versions of these designer chairs were crafted from wood a material he felt more at home with. The solid oak version of the chair was first conceived in 1961 but it was three years later that the Corona chair or model model ‘EJ 605’ as it is seen today was introduced.

Materials of the Corona Chair

The ‘EJ 605’ is efficaciously a lot stronger than the initial oak framed chair. The frame is crafted out of polished stainless steel with four separate, upholstered, oval shaped shells meeting your back at ideal parts, providing maximum comfort and support to the body and the spinal column. The shells are covered in soft Italian semi-aniline black leather. In 1964 it represented the way the future might look, with modern materials creating floating elliptical elements while each shell curved around and acted as armrests.
