Panton Chair

The radical Danish designer Verner Panton's cantilevered stacking chair (1960), is arguably the sexiest chair ever produced. Designed in 1960 the chair epitomizes the decade of pop culture. It is difficult to image now but this exquisite designer chair was revolutionary when first produced with no back legs its swooping S shape and the bright injection moulded plastic enables it to be used both inside and out. Although the Panton S chair fell out of fashion in the 70's and 80's since the mid 90's and its appearance on the cover of Vogue magazine with Kate Moss, the chair and the designer have experiences a renaissance.

History of the Panton Chair

It was a far cry from the traditional crafts and materials Scandinavian furniture designers were famous for in the 30's 40's and 50's. Having Studied with Arne Jacobsen and witnessed his bent plywood designs of the Series 7 chair Panton wanted to break the mould with both his use of materials combined with the latest manufacturing technology. The result was the first single material and single form chair with no breaks or seams, pure simplicity! The chairs are now available in myriad bright and vibrant colours, although purists still say the chair looks best in white, black or red.
Verner Panton was the first at a great many things including the first to successfully develop inflatable furniture and the first to design a card board house! Although many of his more eccentric ideas were not as commercially successful as the Panton chair he remained a visionary until his death in 1998.
