Poul Kjaerholm's PK22 Lounge Chair

Although the chair bears a striking resemblance to Mies Van Der Rohe's earlier Barcelona chair, Poul Kjaerholm’s PK22 easy chair is a design icon in its own right. The minimalist enduring allure of this piece of designer furniture is based largely on the marriage of industrial brushed stainless and soft Italian leather that works in any interior. Kjaerholm believed that steel had the same artistic fineness as wood and his comprehensive PK range exploited both the materials strength and flexibility, with the PK22 chair the ultimate example.

History of the PK22 Easy Chair

This designer chair received immediate commercial and critical acclaim when it was first produced in 1956. Like his Danish compatriot Arne Jacobsen a year earlier, Poul Kjaerholm won the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1957 for the PK22, the finest distinction at the show. Another similarity with many of the great furniture designers of the 20th Century, Kjaerholm was an architect and designed the PK22 originally for his home.
