Eileen Gray adjustable side table

The side table E-1027 is probably the most famous of Eileen Gray's designs, however she failed to receive any critical or commercial acclaim until after her death in 1976. The simple but striking designer coffee table is now widely regarded as a classic piece of 20th century designer furniture and looks perfectly at home with an Eames Lounge Chair or a Florence Knoll Sofa.

History of the Eileen Gray side table

First produced in 1926 for her sister who enjoyed eating and drinking in bed, the table eventually became part of the collection E-1027 for her cliff top house. The adjustable height and C shape of the coffee table allowed the base to slide underneath a bed. Uncomplicated and versatile in its design the table is equally at home being used as a side table, a coffee table or even as cocktail table.

Materials of the Eileen Gray table

Gray developed a passion for industrial materials used by the famous International designers, Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Mies Van Der Rohe, who shared many of her ideals. As close to the original design as possible our version of the E-1027 designer coffee table is constructed from tubular chromed steel with high quality tempered glass table top. Gray’s tubular chromed frame was inspired by the recent steel experiments of her friend Marcel Breuer at the Bauhaus and she went on to use them again in the Bibendum chair.
